Austin-Healey 948lb Bugeye Sprite Midget High-Performance Engine (1958-1962)

The Austin-Healey Bugeye Sprite, produced between 1958 and 1961, is a iconic British sports car that continues to hold a special place in automotive history. Nestled within its attractive and aerodynamic bodywork lies an engine that sets the heart racing for both its performance and character. In this description, we will delve into the intricacies of the optional 948lb high-performance engine, commonly known as the "Big Valve" engine, that graced these agile and captivating little cars.

The 948lb engine was an ambitious upgrade from the standard 4-cylinder, 4-speed Sprite engine. Its design focused on maximizing power output and exhilarating driving experience. At its core lies a 947cc displacement, which may seem diminutive by modern standards. However, this engine is anything but ordinary.

The most striking aspect of the 948lb engine is its "big valve" cylinder head. This design enhances the engine's volumetric efficiency, enabling it to breathe more freely and provide increased power. Consisting of larger inlet valves (1.28 inches or 32.5mm) and exhaust valves (0.93 inches, or 23.6mm), this cylinder head boosts the engine's output.

A side-draft Weber carburetor, offering a more efficient fuel-air mixture, was added to supplement the engine's performance. This component, combined with a hotter exhaust system, ensures a more potent and active driving experience. The engine also received double-barrel SU carburetors as an option in certain markets, providing an alternate method for delivering fuel to the engine for added versatility.

The 948lb engine's power output ranges from 55-62 horsepower at 5,500 RPM, depending on the specific configuration. This substantial increase from the standard engine not only makes the Sprite quicker, but also gives it an engaging and robust character that sets it apart from its counterparts. Furthermore, the 11.5:1 compression ratio of this engine and its single downdraught carburetor makes it suitable for use with unleaded or leaded fuel, providing flexibility to various owners.

Completing the external aesthetics, a small raised bonnet scoop, used to enhance cooling, sits atop the engine bay, signifying the presence of the high-performance engine beneath. Additionally, the modifications for the 948lb engine included a Regular Production Special (RPS) oil cooler mounted near the radiator and a modified water pump to ensure sufficient cooling for the optimized engine.

In operation, the Austin-Healey Sprite with a 948lb engine delivers a motoring experience that is both exhilarating and rewarding. With its zestful powertrain bringing the vehicle to life and its lightweight body and nimble handling allowing for confident control, this combination makes for an intensely enjoyable driving experience. Thus, the Austin-Healey Sprite with a 948lb engine remains a standout choice for enthusiasts who seek a captivating and substantial upgrade for their classic roadster.

The Austin-Healey "Bugeye" Sprite Midget, produced between 1958 and 1961, is a classic British sports car known for its distinctive bulging headlights and agile handling. Here are some pros and cons to consider before buying one:

Pros:

1. Affordability: Compared to other classic sports cars, the Austin-Healey Sprite Midget is relatively affordable, making it an appealing option for those starting in the classic car hobby or those on a budget.

2. Fun to Drive: With its lightweight body and nimble handling, the Sprite Midget is an enjoyable car to drive, especially on winding roads or at the track.

3. Parts Availability: Parts for the Austin-Healey Sprite Midget are generally affordable and easy to find, making it relatively simple to maintain and repair.

4. Historical Significance: The Austin-Healey Sprite Midget is a classic car with a rich history and enthusiast community, making it a desirable collectible.

5. Customizability: The Sprite Midget's simple design allows for easy customization, enabling owners to personalize their car to their preferences.

Cons:

1. Weather Exposure: The open-top design of the Sprite Midget leaves its interior and engine susceptible to the elements, requiring regular maintenance to prevent rust and decay.

2. Limited Comfort: The Sprite Midget's two-seater cockpit offers little in the way of comfort, making long drives less enjoyable for some.

3. Limited Performance: While the Sprite Midget offers nimble handling, its engine output is relatively low compared to other sports cars of the era.

4. Fuel Efficiency: The Sprite Midget's engine is not very fuel-efficient, requiring frequent fill-ups, especially during spirited driving.

5. Limited Storage: The Sprite Midget offers minimal trunk space, making it less ideal for long road trips or expensive to upgrade for increased storage capacity.

Conclusion:

The Austin-Healey Sprite Midget is an affordable, fun-to-drive classic sports car with a rich history and an active enthusiast community. Its affordability, agile handling, and ease of customization make it an appealing option for those starting in the hobby. However, it's important to consider the cons such as limited comfort, weather exposure, and fuel efficiency before making a purchase.

Recommendation:

If you're in the market for a classic sports car and love the idea of an open-top, nimble handling car, the Austin-Healey Sprite Midget is an excellent choice. However, it's recommended to thoroughly inspect any potential purchase, as the exposed nature of the car increases the likelihood of rust and damage. Additionally, consider budgeting for customizations and future repairs. For those seeking more comfort, performance, or storage, other classic sports cars may better suit their needs.

Details:

I do not know if it was runs or but will guarantee no cracks at worst may need rings and bearings. This engine has Alloy Leland Valve Cover, Special alloy rocker arms and shaft. This is a rare remanufactured or slightly used engine for Austin Healey Bugeye Sprite, Sprite and MG Midget model's 1958-1962 with 948cc. I am positive it has a high lift camshaft and compression pistons as well.
