The Chevy 454 Big Block short block rebuild kit, item number 3963512, is a high-performance engine component designed for enthusiasts and professionals seeking to breathe new life into their classic or modern muscle cars. This meticulously engineered rebuild kit is compatible with 1965-1974 Chevy Impala, Caprice, Nova, Camaro, Corvette, and Malibu models, among others, that originally came with the 454 cubic inch, 7.4-liter Big Block V8 engine. It serves as an essential part in a complete engine rebuild, focusing on providing top-grade components found in the engine's lower half and crankshaft area, ensuring a stronger, more reliable bottom end.
This short block kit delivers the following key elements:1. Crankshaft: The core component of the engine's power delivery, the 4340 forged steel crankshaft (flywheel end) ensures unrivaled strength and durability, providing the foundation for the engine's legendary torque and power output.
2. Connecting rods: Machined from high-tensile 4340 steel, these connecting rods offer maximum strength and minimal deflection under heavy load conditions, preventing the risk of piston-to-rod contact and resulting in superior piston-to-crankshaft transmission efficiency. The rods' reinforced fillets minimize friction, maximizing horsepower gains.
3. Pistons: This rebuild kit harnesses the power of 4032 forged aluminum alloy pistons, which provide excellent strength-to-weight ratio and remarkable thermal characteristics. They boast a modular, flat-top design with whisper-quiet ring lands and double-wrist pins for optimized compression and reduced piston slap.
4. Cylinder Kit (liners): The 3963512 short block includes the necessity of a cylinder kit, with new, chrome-molybdenum alloy cylinder sleeves and matching 8.4:1 piston rings, custom-tuned for the 454 Big Block's unique cylinder bore. These components provide a precise and leak-free combustion chamber seal, while accommodating a range of ring gap measurements for optimal engine performance.
5. Main bearings: Low-friction, high-performance main bearings (most sets sold include 7 bearings) are machined from micro-alloyed, chrome steel rolled bearing material, providing a flat contact surface and maintaining minimum clearance for consistent torque delivery and reduced wear.
6. Rod bearings: Complementing the crankshaft and connecting rods, the short block kit includes a set of compatible, low-friction, heat-treated rod bearings, designed to offer superior oil control, reduced frictional losses, and extended engine life.
7. Oil pump: Engineered for enhanced durability and efficiency, the kit includes an oil pump featuring billet housing and heavy-duty gears to manage the oil flow and maintain optimal lubrication of the crankshaft, main bearings, and camshaft.
This Chevy 454 Big Block short block rebuild kit ensures a strong, sturdy foundation for your engine rebuild project by focusing on the heart of the engine: the lower end components. Its meticulously designed components come with detailed installation instructions and prescored cylinder bores, allowing you to upgrade your classic Chevy's power output without compromise.
Buying a rebuilt 396/454 big block Chevy short block can be an exciting decision for vehicle enthusiasts seeking high-performance engine options. This type of engine upgrade offers several advantages, but it also comes with some potential drawbacks. Here are some pros andcons to consider before making a purchase.

3. Versatility: This engine block is compatible with various partnerships such as different intake manifolds, heads, and camshafts, allowing you to customize the engine to meet your specific power and performance requirements.
Cons:1. Cost: The cost of buying and installing a rebuilt 396/454 short block engine can be relatively high due to its performance potential and large size. Factors such as labor costs, replacement parts, and additional components (e.g., electronic fuel injection systems, headers, and exhaust) can add to the overall cost.
2. Complex Installation: Installing a big block Chevy short block engine can be a challenging process that requires a significant investment of time and resources. You'll need specialized tools, knowledge, and experience to complete the installation safely and efficiently.
3. Component Compatibility: Ensure the engine compatibility with your vehicle, as some modifications may be required to accommodate the larger engine in the engine bay. These modifications can include engine mounts, transmission adapters, and exhaust systems.
Conclusion:Considering the pros and cons, a rebuilt 396/454 big block Chevy short block engine can deliver exceptional performance, durability, and versatility, making it an attractive option for those looking for a high-performance engine upgrade. However, the significant cost and complex installation process can be deterrents for some.
If you are committed to the project, understand the entire cost estimate and the scope of work involved, and have the necessary skills or access to experts for installation, a rebuilt 396/454 short block Chevy engine can be a rewarding investment. If you're unsure about the feasibility of the project or lack the resources, it might be worth considering other engine options or seeking professional guidance.
This block is freshly built and has never been started since being machine assembled. This block has no sleeves or other repairs. There are no stamping on the pad and assembly date is starter mounting. This was a ready to run long block when it came me but the heads and intake were not correct so I removed them.
The timing set is the double roller type. This is a freshly machined 4 bolt main 454 shortblock. He recently sold one of his storage facilities and I bought a number parts from him including this engine. He planned to install this in the car but someone made him a crazy offer on and he took it.
I bought this engine out of an estate about 7 years ago and sold it to the owner a 1970 Chevalier SS convertible. The casting number on the block is 3963512. This is a very hard to find shortblock that fully machined, assembled, and ready install. The new owner planned to install a LS engine so he kept this in storage for future project.
The casting date is L 8/9 which decodes as Dec, 8th 1969. He took very good care of this engine by keeping it oiled and triple wrapped. The cam and lifters are new but the specs unknown.
